Prepared Speeches: Working from manuals supplied by Toastmasters International, 2-3 members present speeches designed to develop specific skills. These speeches allow our members to gain experience in speaking in front of a group as well as writing a speech.
Table Topics: 3-5 Toastmasters are given a subject or question by the Table Topics Master upon which they must speak extemporaneously for 2 minutes. Guests are welcome to participate and answer a question. This is a great way to practice answering unexpected questions and impromptu speaking.
Evaluations: Speakers get immediate feedback on how well they accomplished their assigned objectives. Each speech has a specific goal that is emphasized in the evaluation as well as the general presentation.
There are several other roles that Toastmasters perform that provide speaking opportunities and keep the meeting flowing smoothly. These include the Toastmaster who sets the agenda and introduces each participant, the Ah Counter who listens for crutch words like "ah" and "um", the Timer who keeps track of the speech times, and a member who gives an inspirational thought for the day. We also have a Jokemaster who sets the happy mood for the meeting and a grammarian who tries to catch words and phrases that came up during the meeting which merit some corrections or commendations.
In a nutshell, we learn through motivation, execution and feedbacks. |
